Prior to his presentation, a student attacked Horowitz, throwing a pie at him. The Chief of Campus Police stepped in front of Horowitz and was hit by the pie. The Butler AAUP published a statement in the campus newspaper condemning the student’s action. The Butler AAUP does not endorse Horowitz’s ideas.

12/1/23. The forced resignation of the Dean of the ISU College of Business, efforts to merge the College of Nursing and the College of Health and Human Performance, and the proposed restructuring of the College of Arts and Sciences have exacerbated tensions between administration and faculty. Faculty are also concerned about the administration’s refusal to issue cost of living raises for the past three years, even while the university president received a 12 percent salary increase. The majority of faculty and staff are working for 9 percent less pay (adjusted for inflation) than they earned in 2003-2004. The chapter has pursued the following activities:

11/30/23. The chapter organized a fall forum to investigate the potential of collective bargaining by the ISU faculty and support staff. The chapter hosted two speakers, Pat Shaw from the national AAUP and K. Vinodgopal from the ICAAUP, who addressed a group of faculty interested in the issue.

11/29/23. In response to efforts to restructure the College of Arts and Sciences, the chapter wrote an open letter to Interim Dean Thomas Sauer and Provost Jack Maynard requesting that shared governance procedures be followed. The chapter held a press conference to discuss the letter. Media coverage included the ISU student paper, the local Terre Haute paper, and a short story on local television news.
