Across the country, students are exercising their free speech rights to protest the complicity of their universities with the violence being committed against civilians in Gaza. The Indiana Conference, together with multiple Indiana chapters, has joined chapters across the country in signing the AAUP statement, “In Defense of the Right to Protest.”

Furthermore, the Indiana Conference released the following statement in support of Indiana University students:

The Executive Board of the Indiana Conference of the AAUP (ICAAUP) deplores the decision of Indiana University President Pamela Whitten and Provost and Executive Vice President Rahul Shrivastav to violently remove peaceful demonstrators from Dunn Meadow. The unprovoked and unnecessary use of force contravenes basic principles both of academic freedom and shared governance. Such destructive and heavy-handed acts of militarized policing have no place in a democracy, let alone at any university or college, and run counter to basic provisions of free exercise of citizenship including freedom of assembly and the right to petition for redress of grievances.”
